Myopia Control: MiSight® 1 day
This is a rapidly developing field led by contact lens clinicians. And, until recently, there have been two successful myopia treatments – Overnight Vision Correction contact lenses and Multi-focal soft contact lenses.
Now there is a new, ground-breaking soft contact lens - MiSight® 1 day - launched in March 2017 which is scientifically proven to slow myopia progression in children.
We are proud to have been selected amongst just a few optometrists in the UK (and the only practice in the South West) to offer this revolutionary contact lens.
What are the different lenses available?
MiSight® 1 day daily disposable lenses - NEW!
This revolutionary new, contact lens launched in the UK in March 2017, is specifically designed to manage myopia progression and is scientifically proven to slow myopia progression by up to 59% over two years. As a soft, daily disposable lens it is comfortable to wear and suitable for children from six years and up.
Overnight Vision Correction lenses (or OrthoKeratology, sometimes called Ortho-K) with rigid (hard) lenses
These are specially shaped contact lenses which gently flatten the cornea so that the light focuses correctly on the back of the retina. The lenses act like a miniature jelly mould and because the cornea is elastic it will retain the corrected shape for at least 36 hours. Ortho-Klenses are custom designed and are worn every night while you are asleep.
Multi-focal soft lenses
It has been shown that the use of this type of contact lens, worn during the day, can reduce the growth in a child’s eye by around 30%. This means that any increase in myopia can be significantly reduced. The lens is soft, worn daily, cleaned each night and replaced each month. It is also available as a disposable contact lens.
Which is right for me or my child?
All these contact lenses help to slow the progression of myopia. They are unlikely to stop it and pre-existing myopia cannot be reversed. However, these lenses cost only a few pounds more than conventional soft contact lenses which will not slow down myopia progression. We can advise you on the best option for your eyes.
What do I do next?
We can advise the right contact lens to help slow down your myopia progression. To do this, you can join our specialist Myopia Control Programme. At your initial appointment we will take a detailed family history, with the aid of a questionnaire. Then, together we can discuss the options available to you and fit you with lenses. If you want time to think about it or to do further research, we can use this initial appointment to point you in the right direction. Patients normally require a minimum of three appointments in the first year.
