Emergency & Urgent Eyecare

Within Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire there is no NHS funding for emergency or urgent eye care apart from Bristol Eye Hospital.  We offer both emergency and urgent eye care appointments for a small private fee.

Below are our definitions of emergency & urgent eye care.

Emergency Eyecare

If you have an eye issue that requires assessment within 24 hours, please telephone or email us; we will triage according to urgency and aim to see you the same day, with an appointment fee of £89 (emergency care is included for EyeSense members).

Examples include:

  • Red or sore eyes
  • Photophobia (light sensitivity)
  • Eye pain or contact lens discomfort
  • A foreign object in the eye
  • Sudden changes in vision
  • Flashes and floaters that may suggest a retinal detachment.
  • Bristol Eye Hospital is open for emergency eye problems (08:30-16:30)
  • 0117 342 4613 (08:30-16:30)
  • 0117 923 0000 (Switchboard) for out of hours on-call ophthalmologist

Urgent Eyecare

If you have an eye issue that does not require immediate attention, please telephone or email us; we will triage according to urgency and aim to see you within 3 days, with an appointment fee of £99 (urgent eyecare is included for EyeSense members).

Examples include:

  • Longstanding red or sore eyes
  • Photophobia (light sensitivity)
  • Contact lens discomfort
  • A slow change in vision
  • Longstanding flashes and floaters.
