Gerard Awarded Master’s Degree for Groundbreaking Work in Pre-Myopia

IMG_0384

At Lynne Fernandes Optometrists, we’re thrilled to share some exciting news: our Clinical Director, Gerard Fernandes, has been awarded a Master of Science (MSc) in Optometry by Aston University. This prestigious recognition comes in honour of his pioneering work on pre-myopia - the earliest stage before short-sightedness begins.

A Research Milestone in Children's Eye Health

Gerard’s MSc dissertation, supervised by world-renowned optometry expert Professor Nicola Logan, combined a comprehensive global review of research with a detailed UK-specific treatment model for pre-myopia. His work provides a vital framework for identifying children at risk and intervening early, before traditional myopia symptoms appear.

Why Pre-Myopia Matters

“We now know that myopia is no longer something we simply correct - we can actually slow or prevent its onset,”

— Gerard Fernandes

By recognising the early signs of pre-myopia, optometrists can begin proactive treatment much earlier, giving children the best possible long-term visual outcomes.

Turning Research Into Action

This isn’t just academic theory—it’s already in practice. At Lynne Fernandes Optometrists, we’re currently supporting six children identified as pre-myopic with:

1. Tailored treatment plans

2. Lifestyle and visual hygiene advice

3. Encouraging increased outdoor time

4. Close monitoring

5. Specialist optical interventions (when appropriate)

The Bigger Picture: A Growing Global Concern

Pre-myopia is an increasing issue around the world. Key contributing factors include:

1. More screen time

2. Less time spent outdoors

3. Family history of myopia

Children today are developing myopia earlier and progressing faster than previous generations. Gerard’s research delivers a much-needed roadmap for early intervention in the UK.

Predictive, Preventative, and Personalised Care

We’re incredibly proud that Gerard’s work is already making a difference in how we care for our young patients. It strengthens our ongoing commitment to modern, evidence-based optometry, focused on prevention and personalisation.
