BCLA Conference – Myopia, momentum & meeting global leaders

Lynne and I were thrilled to attend Day 1 of the BCLA Clinical Conference, an event that always brings fresh energy and inspiration. This year’s spotlight was on myopia management and anterior eye research, which felt incredibly relevant to the work we carry out daily at Lynne Fernandes Optometrists.
Pre-myopia: early intervention that works
One of the standout sessions of the day explored pre-myopia. We covered risk factors, progression trends, and innovative treatment strategies. As someone whose MSc dissertation focused on early identification and management of childhood myopia, I found it especially affirming to see our evidence-based clinical approach echoed by global leaders.
It was a proud moment to realise that the proactive strategies we’ve implemented in practice are not just current - they’re industry-leading.
Global insights and local impact
We had the honour to meet and learn from some of the world’s leading experts in myopia control, contact lens development, and anterior eye health. The discussions were around behavioural interventions and new-generation ophthalmic lenses like Stellest and MyoSmart. This reinforced our belief in a tailored, patient-centred approach to managing myopia.
This personalised model, grounded in science and designed for the long-term health of the eye, is exactly what we offer across all three of our practices.
Innovations in contact lenses and front-of-eye care
The day also featured cutting-edge updates in contact lens technology, dry eye management, and front-of-eye diagnostics. These sessions underscored how rapidly optometry is evolving and how vital it is to stay engaged with the latest clinical research and innovation.
