Seeing the Whole Picture: The Benefits of Eidon Ultra Wide Field Imaging

Untitled design (39)

Here, at Lynne Fernandes Optometrists in Bristol, we’re passionate about giving you the clearest possible view of your eye health. That’s why we’ve introduced Eidon Ultra Wide Field (UWF) retinal imaging - one of the most advanced ways to see the back of your eye in true colour and incredible detail.

It helps us detect small changes early and keep your eyes healthy for years to come as part of our commitment to providing quality eye care for every patient.

Why Ultra Wide Field Imaging Matters

During an eye examination, we look at your retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye). Traditional retinal cameras only capture a small section at a time. The Eidon UWF system, however, gives us a 200-degree panoramic image in high definition, allowing us to see nearly the entire retina at once.

This wider view makes it easier to spot early signs of conditions like diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, and peripheral retinal changes - often before you notice any symptoms. The scan is non-invasive, quick, and completely comfortable, taking just seconds per eye. Because the results are instantly available, we can show you what we see right away, explaining any findings with clear, full-colour visuals that make sense.

This means faster answers, earlier detection, and a more complete understanding of your eye health, all without discomfort. It’s part of the complete eye care approach that helps us protect your long-term vision.

True-colour Imaging - Why It Matters More Than You Think

When it comes to your eyes, colour accuracy matters. Unlike some imaging systems that use green lasers and can distort natural tones, Eidon UWF captures your retina in true colour. That means the images reflect what your eye really looks like - no colour filters, no false tones.

Seeing your retina in true colour helps us detect subtle pigment changes, tiny haemorrhages, and variations in blood vessels that laser-based systems might miss or misinterpret. It’s like comparing a filtered photo to a real one, you see the genuine picture.

When we show you your retinal image in the consulting room, you’re seeing exactly what we see - a true and accurate view of your eye health. This level of precision makes it easier for us to explain what’s happening and for you to understand how your eyes are doing. It’s one of the reasons patients trust our optical eye care expertise for accurate diagnosis and reassurance.

Fundus Autofluorescence - A Deeper Layer of Insight

The Eidon UWF doesn’t just take surface-level images. It also offers Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF) imaging, which gives us a deeper look into the health of your retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). This is the layer that nourishes and protects your retina, and changes here can be an early sign of problems long before vision is affected.

Dr Daniel Todd:

The Eidon also uses Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF) — a clever way of showing how healthy your retinal cells are. It highlights areas of stress or early damage that can’t be seen in standard images, helping us spot potential issues like macular degeneration even sooner.

By combining UWF and FAF, we get a clearer, more complete picture of your eye health — so we can look after your vision in the best possible way."

This gives us valuable insight into your eye health, often before you notice any vision changes and allows us to take steps early to protect your sight.

Why Repeat Imaging Is So Valuable

The real power of Eidon imaging lies in its ability to track changes over time. Under our eyecare plan, we use your Eidon UWF images to create a long-term record of your eye health. Every year, we compare your latest images with previous ones to spot even the most subtle changes.

This long-term monitoring allows us to deliver personalised, predictive, and preventative care. Instead of reacting to problems after they occur, we can identify potential risks early and act before your vision is affected.

Your Eidon images become part of your personal eye health history - a visual story of your eyes that evolves with you. This gives both you and your optometrist a complete and reliable way to understand your vision over time.
