How to fix loose glasses, and why it is worth getting it done properly

3947_50378

If you've ever wondered how to fix loose glasses, you're not alone. While DIY solutions may seem tempting, the most effective and lasting fix is often a simple professional adjustment

Whether your frames are sliding down your nose, sitting wonky on your face or just not feeling as snug as they once did, the solution is usually quick, straightforward

Why do glasses become loose?

Glasses take quite a bit of daily wear and tear. They are put on and taken off dozens of times, folded and unfolded, occasionally sat on, and sometimes dropped. Over time, this naturally causes the frame to loosen, twist or lose its shape, even with the most careful handling.

The most common causes include:

  • Screws working loose from the hinges over time
  • The temples (the arms that sit over your ears) gradually widening or bending outwards
  • The nose pads shifting position, so they no longer sit correctly on the bridge of your nose
  • The frame itself warping slightly, often from being placed face down or stored in a bag without a case

None of these are signs that there is anything wrong with your glasses. They are simply a natural result of regular use.

How to fix loose glasses at home

The screw fix

If one of the tiny screws in your hinge has worked loose, a small precision screwdriver (the kind often found in glasses repair kits or Christmas crackers) can tighten it back up. Turn gently, as these screws are very small and easy to overtighten or strip. If the screw has come out entirely and you cannot find it, a temporary fix is to use a small piece of clear sticky tape over the hinge to hold the arm in place until you can get to your optician.

The nose pad fix

If your glasses are sliding down your nose, the nose pads may have shifted outwards over time. You can try very gently squeezing them inwards with your fingers or a soft cloth, moving in small increments and trying the glasses on as you go. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, particularly on metal nose pad arms, as they can snap if handled too forcefully.

What to avoid

It can be tempting to try bending the frame or temples back into shape yourself, particularly if the fix seems obvious. However, this is where most at-home attempts go wrong. Plastic frames in particular need to be warmed gently before they can be adjusted safely, and without the right technique or tools, it is very easy to crack or permanently damage the frame. If the issue is more than a loose screw, it is genuinely better to leave it to a professional.

Why Lynne Fernandes Optometrists is always the better option

It is normally free and takes minutes

At our practices in Bristol, Nailsea, Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge, frame adjustments are complimentary and take just a few minutes. Our staff have the specialist tools needed to adjust your glasses safely and accurately. They can heat and reshape plastic frames, precisely adjust the temples to fit the contours of your head and ears, replace missing screws, and reposition nose pads so your glasses sit exactly where they should. The result is a fit that feels noticeably more comfortable and secure than most home fixes can achieve.

A good fit matters more than you might think

Glasses that do not sit correctly on your face do not just feel uncomfortable. If your frames have shifted position, the optical centres of your lenses may no longer align properly with your pupils, which can cause eyestrain, headaches and even affect the clarity of your vision. This is particularly important if you wear progressive lenses or have a stronger prescription, where lens positioning is especially critical.

Bring in any glasses, not just ours

You do not need to have bought your glasses from us to come in for an adjustment. We are happy to take a look at any pair, whether they are old favourites that have gradually lost their shape or a new pair that has never quite felt right.
